Nar Phu Valley-Annapurna Trek

A Hidden Himalayan Kingdom

Description

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a remarkable journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally preserved Himalayan regions. This trek combines dramatic landscapes, ancient Tibetan-influenced villages, high mountain passes, and a deep sense of isolation—ideal for trekkers seeking an authentic adventure away from crowded routes.

Crossing the Kang La Pass (5,200m) is a true highlight. From the pass, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Kang Guru (6,981m), Pisang Peak (6,091m), Himlung Himal, Nemjung (7,140m), Gyaaji Kang, and the vast Annapurna range stretching across the horizon.

Culture & Lifestyle

Nar and Phu are compact stone-and-mud villages inhabited by people of Tibetan (Bhote) origin. Historically followers of the Bon religion, most villagers now practice Tibetan Buddhism, primarily of the Nyingma sect. Trade with Tibet once shaped their way of life, but for centuries this has no longer been possible.

Today, livelihoods depend on subsistence farming, yak herding, collection of medicinal herbs, and seasonal tourism through trekking and mountaineering expeditions. Life here remains deeply connected to nature and tradition.

From the viewpoint above Nar village, spectacular peaks such as Pokarkhang (6,372m), Amotsang (6,393m), Jomsom Himal (6,315m), Thansunjiti (6,084m), the Chulu Range (6,000m+), and Himlung & Nemjung dominate the skyline.

Due to restricted access and its remoteness, Nar Phu receives far fewer visitors than the main Annapurna region—making it perfect for trekkers who wish to avoid crowds and explore a truly hidden Himalayan world.

Return via Annapurna Circuit route

After crossing Kang La Pass, we rejoin the Annapurna Circuit near Ngawal and continue to Manang, one of the most vibrant villages in the region. Here, we allow time for acclimatization and exploration, including trips to Ice Lake, Milarepa Cave, monasteries, or simply resting and enjoying the mountain atmosphere.

The trek then continues via Upper Pisang, descending to Chame before taking a breathtaking scenic but rough drive back half way then riverbed of Trisuli onward to Kathmandu.

Optional Adventure Extensions

For those with extra time and a stronger sense of adventure, the trek can be extended by:

·        Crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m), or

·        Visiting Tilicho Lake and crossing the challenging Mesokanto La Pass

These extensions offer a rewarding test of endurance and high-altitude trekking skills.
