Makalu Trekking

Remote Less Crowded Trek

Description

It is most famous as a remote trek which takes you to the base of Mt. Makalu (8463m), the world’s fifth highest mountain. At the beginning of the trek, experience the trails beside the Arun River. It originates from Tibet and enters Nepal, later joins with many other glacier rivers, finally forming the giant Sapta Koshi River. The Arun River travels between the two giant peaks of Mt. Manaslu and Mt. Kanchenjunga.

The trek starts from the lower hilly area entering the Makalu Barun National Park from Seduwa. The trip sets deep into some of Nepal’s most unseen and amazing scenery, from the sweeping Arun River Valley, over the Barun La (4200m.) to the icy fields surrounding Makalu (8463m). This is an extremely isolated area, surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery with Mt. Everest (8848m), Baruntse (7129m) and Chamlang (7317m), Peak 6 (6739m) dominating a very impressive mountain landscape.

The first few days, we trek through the deepest gorge between giant peaks Mt. Makalu and Mt. Kanchenjunga. Then trek through the local village of Chetri crossing over Arun river  then trek to Makalu to Barun valley. The upper area is habited by Sherpas, who are a little different from the Khumbu Sherpas. Most local lodges are run by locals of Tashi Gaon during tourist season and close for the rest of the time. We see potato-terraced farmlands and villagers following century-old tradition. Further on, you will pass rhododendron, fir, pine, juniper forests, then wild bush and herbal plants, followed by barren windy land with colourful wild flowers. Then the trail enters a remote landscape forgotten by time with no permanent settlements, only a few shepherds tending their livestock or seasonal trekker lodges.

For more adventure, we offer an additional option by crossing Barun valley, Sherpani Col (pass) to Amphu Laptsa, Hongu Basin to Chukkung towards Khumbu side.

NOTE: All trips can be customized as per your interest, fitness level and schedule.
