Upper Mustang Tour
The Lost Kingdom of Tibet

Description

Upper Mustang, often called the “Lost Kingdom of Tibet,” is a high-altitude trans-Himalayan region with a landscape similar to the Tibetan plateau. It lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas and was once part of an ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet, passing through Kora La (4,660m). The region was closed to tourists until 1992.

The capital of the former kingdom was Lo Manthang, a walled city that flourished in the 18th century as a Buddhist kingdom of the Himalayas. Often described as the most beautiful Himalayan desert on Earth, it sits behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The area is marked by vast barren ridges and sandy plateaus that change colors with the seasons.

Development & Accessibility

With the Nepal-China agreement under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a road is being developed to connect Kathmandu, Pokhara, Baglung, and Mustang to the Nepal-China border at Kora La. While this has led to fewer trekking routes, 4WD vehicles now make travel easier along the Kali Gandaki River, which flows through the deepest gorge in the world, between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

A 7–10 day trip can now cover many important sights, with a mix of driving and short hikes to monasteries, ancient caves, and scenic viewpoints. Travelers will pass through the dramatic Kali Gandaki canyon and cross high mountain passes adorned with fluttering prayer flags.

History & Unique Landscape

Lo’s early history is wrapped in legends and mystery. One of the most significant cultural events is the Teeji Festival in May, which attracts people from various villages for a special Buddhist ceremony.

The landscape is a striking mix of barley fields in the desert, flat-roofed villages, Buddhist stupas (Chortens), and high mountain passes decorated with colorful prayer flags. The region is also famous for its rocky hills with thousands of ancient caves—almost 10,000 man-made caves originally used as burial chambers or hiding places. Over time, they became homes and later served as meditation (Cham) retreats for Buddhist monks seeking isolation.

Culture & Settlements

The region is home to Gurung and Thakali communities, living at altitudes between 2,000 to 4,000 meters, mainly along the Kali Gandaki River. Visitors will find tourist lodges and local tea houses for accommodation. During summer, nomadic herders (gypsies) set up camps to graze their cattle.

Optional High-Altitude Trekking

For adventure seekers, there is an option to trek further east from Luri Gompa on a more challenging route. This trail leads to Damodar Kund (a sacred lake), Saribung Peak (6,340m), and Bhrikuti Peak (6,364m), eventually reaching Nar Valley.
